Philosophy

When Prof. Dr.-Ing. Otto Mecheels founded the independent Hohenstein Institute in Bönnigheim in 1946 his main priority was relating research and teaching directly to practical applications.

His son, Prof. Dr. Jürgen Mecheels, built on his work, and expanded the Hohenstein Institute between 1962 and 1995 into an internationally reputed research and service centre with an outstanding range of expertise.

Since 1995, the institute has been under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Stefan Mecheels, the third generation to run the family business, who has carried on the philosophy of the “unity of research, service and training” in his work. The positive development of the Hohenstein Institute up to the present day is testament to the success of this underlying principle.

The Hohenstein Institute offers manufacturers, retailers, service providers and consumers “competence from one single source”, covering a wide range of distinct, but closely linked fields of work. The result of this interdisciplinary approach is the successful cooperation with other research institutes from sectors such as medicine, electronics or microsystem technology. These networks open up totally new areas of application for textile products and thus provide the Hohenstein Institute’s clients with additional markets and opportunities for the future.

In this context, particularly high priority is placed on the effective transfer of research results in lectures, seminars, publications etc. as well as the practical application of the knowledge acquired in the service sector for the benefit of numerous companies.

The research work at the Hohenstein Institute is complemented by a diverse range of testing, service and certification services.
