BOENNIGHEIM, Germany, October 1, 2026 – Hohenstein has registered under the European Union's Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) for the first time, putting the testing and certification company's own environmental performance under independent, recurring audit.
EMAS is the EU's environmental management standard and goes beyond ISO 14001. Registered organizations assess their environmental impacts, set specific objectives and report progress against performance indicators. Independent, accredited environmental verifiers review both the system and the results on a recurring basis, and the organization must publish a verified environmental statement.
To register, Hohenstein analyzed the environmental impacts of its operations, identified improvement opportunities and set environmental goals. After an external verifier validated the system, Hohenstein received its EMAS registration. Its environmental statement, including objectives, measures and key performance indicators, is available in German on the Hohenstein website.
"EMAS validation makes our environmental management externally verifiable," said Katja Hetzer, environmental management representative at Hohenstein. "Clear performance indicators let us measure progress and disclose it. The registration also commits us to keep pursuing our environmental objectives."
Brands and retailers that ask their suppliers and service providers for environmental data can now check Hohenstein's against a verified public record.
"We help our customers make quality and sustainability visible and verifiable, and we apply the same standard to ourselves," said Stefan Droste, CEO of Hohenstein. "EMAS gives us a framework to pursue environmental goals, use resources responsibly and keep improving."
